Reimagining the Doolan-Larson Building for a New Generation

The Corner of Haight & Ashbury

Open House every Thursday afternoon, from 4-6pm PT.

Welcome!

At the corner of Haight and Ashbury stands the historic Doolan-Larson House and Storefronts, a landmark of the counterculture and a symbol of San Francisco’s ongoing role as the nexus of cultural and political change.

In 2017, Norm Larson gifted this property to San Francisco Heritage to protect its legacy and unlock its public potential. That dream is coming to life in 2025, as we invite bold, dynamic concept proposals for the future use of this important site.

To that end, San Francisco Heritage is inviting teams to propose a public-serving cultural use for the historic ensemble of buildings. A Request for Concept Proposals (RFCP) will be released on this site on August 1, 2025.

This website is your gateway to join the conversation: explore the opportunity, arrange a visit, share your ideas, and help shape what comes next. We welcome your voice – help us create a living center that explores the past and inspires what’s possible for the future.

The Doolan-Larson House & Storefronts:
A National Historic Treasure

The Doolan-Larson House is a National Historic Treasure because of its location at Haight & Ashbury and because of its architectural integrity. This opportunity is a chance to explore San Francisco’s role in shaping social, cultural, and political trends and disruptions, and its continued impact on the national consciousness.

Haight & Ashbury remains the epicenter of the counterculture movement, inspiring people to seek new ways of thinking and living. People from across the country came to San Francisco to search for acceptance, meaning, and opportunity—what happens next at the Doolan-Larson buildings is your opportunity to be part of this story.
